Nov 16, 2005 - Command Position for Your Desk

Thought for the Week -
Command Position for Your Desk

We had a great call on Feng Shui for your home office, and I wanted to share a tip about the positioning of your desk: Make sure your desk is in the command position of the room.

You know how a CEO always has their desk situated in a powerful position in the room?

You can do the same by making sure you can see the door of your office from your desk.

(Linda had tons more tips for us -- about why the clutter gets to you, what to do if you have too many piles, how to use red ribbons in your office, what to do if your desk has to face the wall.

I was frantically trying to write them all down! We recorded the call so you can still learn all her secrets!  I haven't updated the page yet, but you can still register and you'll get an email with the link to the recording so you can start listening right now. Be sure to check it out at:

How is your holiday planning? I promised you some more steps and you can get them all (including the new Saving Dinner for the Holidays book) at

(By the way I used a template site to create this one as a demo. In case you are looking for an inexpensive way to create a website or get your domain names, visit

Happy writing (and organizing!) this week!

Best,

For freelance writers... The best time for each activity

One of the best ways to manage your time is to recognize what you can handle today -- and what you can't.

For example, today I am just not able to create.

I had planned to tackle one of my new websites and really make some progress, and I just couldn't get going (luckily I don't have an editor breathing down my neck to get it done). So I switched over to do fairly left-brained accounting work, and I'm getting so much more done without forcing myself to plod along without inspiration.

For authors and publishers.... Book Design and Production

How many times have you seen a self-published book and just cringed at the cover -- or opened it and the book was painful to read because the design was not well-done.

I've seen this so many times.

The worst part is that often the underlying book is good. It's just that the packaging leaves a lot to be desired.

Author Pete Masterson has decided to tackle this problem with his new book, Book Design and Production. It is so needed! He gets into the details of how to properly create and format your book and cover (and get it printed) so that your end-product looks good.

He even explains why Microsoft Word isn't the best place to create your manuscript (but how to do it anyway if that's all you've got to work with). He explains how to pick fonts (you really have to get this right for your book to look good), how to hire a designer, and how to read the clauses in your print contracts.

This is one of those books that should be required reading for anyone publishing their own book!

Happy organizing! Julie

"Julie, I am sending a quick note to thank you for your well measured and extra-ordinary website. You have a tremendous amount of information at a very reasonable cost. I subscribed to your free site and, for the first time in forty years of writing, found a planner that works for me.  I felt so guilty for receiving so much information free from your
site that I have now ordered and downloaded the e book. I have found that you have struck a cord among so  many writers regarding procrastination and simple  organization. Keep up the good work.
